CASE STUDY
Automated Onion Processing System with Vision-Guided Robotics
Food processing
Client Challenge:
An onion processing facility sought to automate their labor-intensive and time-consuming onion preparation process. The manual tasks of topping, tailing, and peeling onions were not only inefficient but also caused discomfort and potential health issues for workers due to the repetitive nature of the work and the irritant properties of onions. The facility needed a solution that could automate these tasks, improve throughput, and enhance worker safety.
Our Solution:
We designed and implemented a fully automated onion processing system. Saber Engineering was responsible for the entire project scope, from design and engineering to procurement, construction, and installation.
Automated Onion Processing System Features
01.
Robots
Five Fanuc washdown robots for food-safe operation.
02.
Vision Systems
AI-powered vision systems mounted on custom end effectors for precise onion identification and picking.
03.
Topping and Tailing Machine
Custom-designed machine for efficient onion preparation.
04.
Vibratory Feeder Table
For controlled presentation of onions to the robots.
05.
Peeling Mechanism
Custom-designed mechanism for onion skin removal.
The Results:
The automated onion processing system revolutionized the facility's operations. The system significantly increased throughput, processing a large volume of onions quickly and efficiently. The automation of topping, tailing, and peeling tasks eliminated manual labor, reducing the risk of repetitive strain injuries and eye irritation for workers. The vision-guided robots ensured precise and consistent handling of onions, minimizing waste and improving product quality. The system's hygienic design and washdown capabilities met stringent food safety standards.
